Mission Statement

Formed in 2016, Hanona is the non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated toward supporting Nā Hanona. Hanona’s mission is “to elevate Native Hawaiian wisdom and intellect by providing cultural learning opportunities for our communities within the four pillars of Hawaiian learning: Kahuna Nui , Ho‘omanamana Ka Pule , Ka Mauli Ola, and Hūnā Noʻeau.” Hanona envisions generations of Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners who are grounded in Hawai‘i’s indigenous cultural traditions and practices.

Four Pillars of Hawaiian Learning

  • Kahuna Nui

The Kahuna Nui is a priest versed in aspects of the profession within the pillars of learning. The Kahuna Nui is the pouhana or foundation beam who provides a thread of constancy yet allows other pillars to continue and stand strong and support the corners of the Hale.

  • Hoʻomanamana Ka Pule

There is a need in the greater community to re-establish traditional prayers, the interactions within these prayers, and its interaction and relationship with the natural world.

  • Ka Mauli Ola

To preserve and perpetuate the vision that “Hula is Life” – the relationship and lifestyle of Native Hawaiians through Hula (Hawaiian dance traditions) must continue to be taught in both Hula Kahiko (traditional dance) and Hula Auana (modern dance).

  • Hūnā Noʻeau

To ensure that traditional materials used to create implements, costumes, and adornments, students and community members will learn about all the plants needed to create implements, lei (wreaths), and dyes.
